Types of Gun Jams: Debunking the Myth of Revolver Infallibility

When it comes to firearms, revolvers are often touted as being virtually jam-proof. The myth goes that because they're mechanical devices, they can't possibly malfunction or 'jam' like semi-automatic pistols do. However, this is simply not true.

While it's true that revolvers don't jam in the classical sense – i.e., they won't get stuck on a single round and refuse to fire – they can still experience malfunctions that render them unusable during a critical self-defense situation.

One common issue with revolvers is wear and tear on the cylinder star and hand. Over time, these parts can become worn down, causing malfunctions in rotation and making it difficult or impossible to open the cylinder. This can be exacerbated by improper maintenance, such as not regularly inspecting and cleaning the revolver.

Another problem that can arise is with moon clips. These stamped-out spring steel pieces are designed to hold multiple rounds in place within the cylinder, but they can also cause issues if bent out of shape. A bent moon clip can prevent the cylinder from rotating properly, making it difficult or impossible to remove the rounds. Furthermore, if the ejector rod gets bent or jammed, it can interfere with the closing of the cylinder, rendering the revolver inoperable.

In addition to these mechanical malfunctions, revolvers are also susceptible to issues related to ammunition quality. A close inspection of your ammo may reveal imperfections in the crimp, which can cause problems during recoil. Using the wrong type of ammo for your specific firearm can also lead to jams or other malfunctions.

One particularly frustrating issue that can occur with Smith & Wesson revolvers (especially those made prior to 2000) is ejector rod malfunction. During recoil, the ejector rods can unscrew themselves, jamming the cylinder shut and making it difficult or impossible to clear the malfunction.

Another type of revolver malfunction is known as 'bullet creep.' This occurs when a bullet fails to seat properly in its shell casing during recoil, causing it to creep out of the chamber and collide with the barrel's forcing cone. This can lock up the cylinder, rendering the revolver unusable until the jam is cleared.

In extreme cases, revolvers can experience what's known as 'mallet creep.' This occurs when a bullet fails to seat properly in its shell casing during recoil, causing it to become lodged and requiring a mallet and dowel rod to clear the jam. Needless to say, this is not exactly ideal during a high-stress self-defense situation.

While revolvers may not experience the same types of jams as semi-automatic pistols, they are certainly not immune to malfunctions. By understanding these common issues and taking steps to prevent them – such as regular maintenance, proper ammunition selection, and careful handling – you can minimize the risk of a revolver malfunction and ensure that your firearm is ready when you need it most.
